Private boat or shared tour on Lake Como

Five or six of you: a private boat costs about what shared seats do. Two of you: a shared seat is far cheaper, and a private boat buys you the day.

A small varnished wooden motorboat under way on Lake Como with two people aboard, a shoreline town and a rocky green peak behind.

The more of you aboard, the less a private boat costs each of you. See the half day →

Take a private boat if you are five or six, or if you want the day to be yours to steer. Take a shared seat if you are one or two and choosing on price. At five or six a private hour costs about what a shared seat does, and at two well over double.

The two prices, side by side

A shared tour sells by the seat, and the one in this site’s price table lists at €45. A private boat sells whole. On my boats, the scale starts at €250 for one hour and reaches €1,250 for six hours, and one person aboard pays what six pay. The full scale is on what a private boat day costs.

Per head, one private hour

No operator I checked publishes a per-head price for a private boat, so this is division, rounded to the euro.

AboardPer head, one private hour
2€125
3€83
4€63
5€50
6€42

Against the €45 seat, six aboard come in under it, five pay five euros over it, and two pay well over double. Longer trips divide the same way: two hours at €470 come to €78 a head with six aboard, and four hours at €900 to €150.

I have not been on a shared tour here, so its length, route and dock are the listing’s to tell you. For the private side, send me your date and head count, and I send the figure.

What the gap buys

Your own passenger list. Up to six, and nobody else boards.

Your own clock. The hours you booked are yours, whoever else is on the lake.

Your own route. How a private route is decided is on the half-day page.

Villa tickets and meals ashore sit outside every private-boat price I checked.

Deposit or full amount

Booked direct, a private boat usually takes a deposit, while a large booking platform takes the whole sum up front. The cancellation terms for each are in how far ahead to book, and the payment steps in how you pay.

Common questions

There are only two of us. Is a private boat worth it, or is there a better price for two?

The price is for the boat, so two of you pay what six pay. An hour is €250, which is €125 each against the €45 seat on the one shared tour recorded here. If you are choosing on the seat price, at two the shared tour wins by a wide margin. The extra buys a boat that carries only your party, and hours you can add on the spot if the skipper is free.

We are five. Does that fit on one boat, and how does the cost compare?

Yes, five fits, and most boats here take six. A €250 hour comes to €50 each, five euros above the €45 seat, for an hour that is yours alone.

Can we extend once we are out?

On a private boat, yes, on the spot if the skipper is free after you. If you think you will want more time, say so with the date. On a shared tour, ask whoever sells the seat before you book.
