When to leave, not just when the sun sets
Anyone can look up when the sun sets. That does not tell you when to leave. The light people come for starts around forty minutes earlier, and being in the right place for it depends on your pier and on the crossing at that hour. Send me the date and where you are staying, and I tell you when the boat leaves.
How long, which pier, and the weather
The first is how long to be out. Two hours covers the light and the crossing back. Anything shorter turns the good part into a transfer. How long you need on the water goes through each length.
The second is where to get on. The dock decides how much of the hour goes into moving rather than looking. Some piers are free and others cost extra, so which docks are on the free list is worth reading before you choose a hotel.
The third is what happens if the weather turns. What happens to your date and your deposit has its own page.
Some people come for the evening rather than for the boat: an anniversary, or a question they plan to ask. The sunset slot is the one they ask for, and it is also the first to fill.
